Every element of the Transportation Branch insignia maps to a mode of transport: the ship's helm for movement by water, the U.S. highway marker shield for land, and the winged wheel on a rail for railroads. That winged wheel dates to 1919 and long predates the Detroit Red Wings logo it's often compared to. The Corps took its current form on July 31, 1942, when the shield and helm were added, and carries the motto "Spearhead of Logistics."
